Urban and Rural

The map shows the main valley of the River Tyne in the North East of England. Newcastle on Tyne is a city near the mouth of the river. Further up the valley is Tynedale, a completely rural area with Hexham as its main town.

Urban

Newcastle, like many cities, has a diverse population, like these people at a market by the Tyne.

It has large shopping centres. This is the entrance to Eldon Square, one of the largest.

Its Universities are centres for important research - for example Nanotechnology which develops very small devices, at the scale of individual atoms -

Like most cities, Newcastle is a cultural centre. The Building behind this new bridge over the river Tyne, is the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, a converted flour mill. Cities are often able to find new uses for old buildings as there are so many different activities going on.

Cities are administrative centres too. These are Newcastle’s new law courts, surrounded by new flats for people who want to live in the centre of town -

There are many new office blocks for businesses as well.

Rural -

Further up the valley of the Tyne in Tynedale the land near the river is used for grazing cattle -

Land like this is also used for growing cereals -

Land in the hills above the valley is used for grazing sheep -

and also for forestry.

So there is often a clear difference in land use between lowland agriculture based on cattle and cereals and upland agriculture based on sheep and forestry.

This map shows - very approximately how the land is used in part of Tynedale. The white area is the valley land, used for cattle and cereals, and the uplands in brown are used for sheep and forestry.

So in Hexham, the main town in Tynedale, there are dealers for agricultural machinery -

There is a cattle market. Here a ram is being auctioned -

The town itself has a small range of shops, far fewer than the much larger Newcastle -
